Concrete Driveway Cost in Houston: What Drives Your Quote
If you're pricing a new concrete driveway in Houston, you've probably noticed that two quotes for the "same" driveway can be far apart. That's normal. A driveway price comes from the site, not from one number on a chart. Here's what actually moves your quote, so you can compare bids side by side.
1. Size and layout
Square footage is the starting point: length × width, plus the apron at the street and any turnaround or parking pad. Curves, flares and tight corners take more forming time than a straight rectangle.
2. Tearing out the old driveway
Most Houston jobs are replacements. Breaking out and hauling off old concrete (and any asphalt or base underneath) is real labor and disposal, so ask whether demo is included in each quote.
3. Base prep on Houston clay
Greater Houston sits on expansive clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. That movement is a big reason driveways crack. A good quote spells out how the subgrade will be prepared and compacted and what base material goes under the slab. If a bid doesn't mention base prep, ask. More on this in Houston Clay Soil and Your Foundation.
4. Thickness and reinforcement
Slab thickness and steel (rebar or wire mesh) affect both price and how the driveway handles vehicle weight. Ask each contractor what thickness and reinforcement they're pricing so you're comparing like for like.
5. Drainage
Water that sits against or under a slab speeds up soil movement. Slope, joints and where runoff goes all matter, especially on lots that already hold water after a storm.
6. Finish
Broom finish is the standard. Stamped, colored or exposed-aggregate finishes add steps and cost.
7. Permits and access
Some cities and HOAs require a permit or approval for driveway and apron work. Tight access for trucks and equipment can also change the plan.
How to compare quotes
Put each bid next to the others and check: demo included? base prep described? thickness and reinforcement listed? drainage addressed? finish specified? permit handled? The lowest number with blanks in those spots isn't really the lowest number.
